Cottage Cheese

Dairy is a category of foods that does not always have consistent results in the worm bin. Some dairy, the worms will eat just fine. Others, the worms won’t touch. I decided to try feeding my worms cottage cheese to find out which way the worms would respond.

After 3 days, the worms started moving into the cottage cheese. But after a week, the worms had moved out. The cottage cheese got moldy, stunk, and turned into a mucky mess.

After 23 days, I ended the experiment. The worms had never moved back in.

So, what was going on? Here is my best guess. Cottage cheese has 2 components: curds, and whey. I have learned from previous tests that worms will eat whey just fine. I believe the worms that moved into the cottage cheese initially were eating the whey. Once that was eaten, the worms had no interest in the curds, so they moved out and left what was left of the cottage cheese alone.

Cottage cheese is now going on my short, but growing Do Not Feed list.
