Will worms eat citrus?

One of the items that is often on people’s do not feed lists is citrus. If you have been reading this blog for long, you know that I like to feed worms foods that they are not supposed to eat. I had to give citrus a try.

The reason people give for not feeding citrus to worms is that citrus is acidic. I have found that the worms don’t seem to care. However, citrus does contain a chemical called limonene. Limonene is a volatile organic compound that is toxic to worms. But mold breaks down the limonene. After the citrus has gone moldy, and the mold runs its course, the worms will move in and have a feast. It will take a week or two before the worms start to eat the citrus, but once they do, it will be eaten quickly.

In this feeding test, I already knew what the results would be, but I ran the test so that I could document the results.
