Feeding worms meat

Last summer, I posted something about fish fillets in my worm bin. I dug around a few weeks later to see how things were progressing. I didn’t find any sign of the fish fillets. I did find loads of worms in the area where they used to be. I have finally been successful in feeding meat to my worms. It is just a matter of figuring out how.

While the fish was breaking down, it got pretty mucky. You don’t want to be digging around in the bin if you have rotting meat in it.

My experience is pretty much the same as others who have tried something similar. Bury the meat deep in the bin. Cover it with LOTS of bedding. Leave it alone for several weeks. Let the microbes and worms do their jobs. I never saw worms in the fish fillets. I did, however, see a lot of worms in the area near the fish. I suspect the microbes were eating up the fish, aided by the carbon in the bedding. The worms were feasting on the microbe bloom, but not eating the fish. After the microbes finished off the fish, the worms were enjoying the remaining microbe bloom.

My first two attempts at feeding worms meat did not go as well. I gave up on both experiments when they were overrun with maggots.

I don’t recommend doing this if you are new to composting, you don’t have a lot of experience managing a bin, and your bin is not very well established. I wouldn’t do this inside, or even outside in an area that is likely to attract pests such as mice, rats or raccoons. Otherwise, it can be done. And the worms seem to like it.
